Richard Austin Freeman
(1862–1943)
British writer of detective stories, mostly featuring the medico-legal forensic investigator Dr Thorndyke. He invented the inverted detective story; best remembered for his detective stories featuring Dr. Thorndyke; pen name: R. Austin Freeman.

Early in his career Freeman collaborated with friend John James Pitcairn (1860–1936) under the pen name "Clifford Ashdown". Much of their work wasn't released in book form until well after their deaths.
